On October 9, 2024, Centralina hosted a Fall Celebration and Awards Ceremony at Atrium Ballpark in Kannapolis, NC. This event highlighted the work of our organization and member communities, in addition to several people and programs that have made an exceptional impact in our community over the last fiscal year.   Â
Clean Cities & Communities is a Region of Excellence award category that celebrates the integration of sustainable, innovative and resilient initiatives that support maximizing local investments, energy efficiency, our natural spaces and a thriving region.Â
The City of Gastonia was awarded the Clean Cities award for its forward-thinking approach to public transportation, particularly through the implementation of its on-demand microtransit system, GoGastonia. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and efficient transportation models, Gastonia has set a new standard for getting around efficiently and effectively.Â
Committing to Sustainable TransportationÂ
The transition from a traditional fixed-route bus system to an on-demand microtransit model has played a crucial role in reducing Gastoniaâs carbon footprint. The introduction of GoGastonia in July of 2024 not only improved transit accessibility for residents, but has also significantly decreased emissions through the use of smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles. By optimizing routes and reducing idle time, the city has successfully lowered its environmental impact while enhancing the quality of life for its residents.Â
One of the key reasons for Gastoniaâs recognition is its strategic use of technology to create a more sustainable transportation network. GoGastonia employs intelligent booking and routing algorithms, which dynamically adjust to rider demand in real time.
