Feb. 27, 2026 — Centralina Regional Council recognizes Director of Regional Planning Jason Wager as he retires following almost 30 years of service to the organization and the region.
Wager’s path to planning began during his undergraduate studies, when he discovered an interest in geography and spatial analysis. He later pursued graduate studies in urban and regional planning at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, completing an applied program focused on professional practice. An internship at Centralina, quickly evolved into a full-time role and, ultimately, a nearly three-decade career.
In his early days, Wager traveled throughout the region conducting interviews for community development block grants and supporting local planning initiatives. Over time, he developed a deep familiarity with the area’s communities and their evolving needs.
“Some people know every street and every house in their community,” Wager said. “That’s how I’ve come to feel about this region.”
During his tenure, the region experienced significant growth. Small towns expanded, urban areas matured and local governments developed greater internal planning capacity. As communities grew more sophisticated, Centralina’s role shifted from providing day-to-day zoning assistance to helping address complex, long-range challenges.
Among the projects Wager is most proud of is the CONNECT Beyond regional mobility plan, the first region wide vision of its kind. The initiative established a long-term framework for transportation and mobility and produced more than 120 recommendations, which continue to guide current implementation efforts. Wager emphasizes the collaborative nature of the work.
“It wouldn’t have happened without an excellent team at Centralina and incredible partners at other regionally focused organizations,” he said.
Throughout his career, Wager valued the opportunity to translate high-level ideas into tangible outcomes. His work contributed to grant-funded parks, transit improvements, fleet enhancements and land use planning initiatives across the region. He describes Centralina’s role as helping local governments navigate challenges and strengthen outcomes, often working behind the scenes to support member communities.
Reflecting on nearly 30 years of service, Wager expressed appreciation for the many colleagues, clients and public servants who shaped his experience and deepened his understanding of local government’s role in ensuring our desired quality of life. He encourages the next planning director to remain focused on delivering value to member governments while embracing the creativity and innovation that is especially possible at a uniquely positioned organization such as Centralina Regional Council.
Wager describes his career as both fulfilling and foundational. As he looks ahead to the next chapter, he leaves behind a legacy of collaboration, strategic leadership and lasting regional impact.
Centralina extends its gratitude to Jason Wager for his dedicated service and contributions to the communities it serves. His last day with Centralina is March 31, 2026.
