Building a Resilient Energy Future: Centralina CED Attends IEI Forum

On May 28, 2025, the Centralina Community Economic Development team attended the Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI) Future Forward Energy forum at NC State University, joining leaders from across North Carolina to explore strategies for strengthening the state’s energy infrastructure. A key theme throughout the day was the critical importance of investing in community infrastructure to create a more resilient and equitable energy future.

As North Carolina faces increasing threats from extreme weather events, speakers emphasized the need for infrastructure that can withstand and recover from disasters. Forum takeaways focused on actionable steps that local governments and partners can take, including leveraging federal funds to reduce financial burdens, empowering trusted local organizations to manage grants and prioritizing projects that serve vulnerable populations and protect critical services.

This message aligns with Centralina’s upcoming Built to Last: Moving Hazard Mitigation Initiatives Forward event, scheduled for June 25, 2025, in Kannapolis. The no-cost workshop is designed to equip local governments with tools and strategies to tap into the $2 billion no-match Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. It will bring together regional leaders, emergency managers, infrastructure staff and federal and state partners to kick off a collective effort to secure funding for resilient community infrastructure – one that local governments don’t want to miss out on

By prioritizing community infrastructure and working together as a region, the nine Centralina counties can strengthen their ability to reduce future risks, safeguard essential services and build long-term resilience across all communities.
