Each August, Congress pauses its work in Washington, D.C., and federal lawmakers return home for what is known as a district work period. During this traditional August recess, members of Congress focus on engaging with constituents, participating in local events and hearing directly from the communities they represent. Centralina Regional Council leverages these district work periods to provide an opportunity for local leaders to meet in-person with members of our Congressional Delegation and share updates on priorities in Centralina’s federal action plan.
August Advocacy Meetings
Centralina organized and held advocacy meetings on August 15 with two members of the U.S. House of Representatives. In the morning, Centralina delegates and local officials met with Congressman Tim Moore, who represents North Carolina’s 14th congressional district, in the City of Mount Holly. Later that day, we convened in Lincoln County at the Lincoln Economic Development Association, where delegates and local officials met with Congressman Pat Harrigan, who represents the 10th congressional district. Earlier in August, N.C. Department of Transportation Chairman Anthony Lathrop and Legislative Director Jackie Hunley from the office of Congressman Addison McDowell (NC-06) joined a Centralina Board of Delegates meeting for a conversation about regional mobility and transportation priorities.

Each of these conversations covered developments from Capitol Hill and included meaningful discussions about regional mobility, infrastructure, workforce development and regional growth. These sessions served as an important platform to strengthen connections between key stakeholders, amplify awareness of regional and local needs and highlight major initiatives.
Congress returned from the August recess on September 2. Looking ahead, additional district work periods are scheduled for the remainder of 2025 during the weeks of September 22, November 10 and November 24. Congress is also expected to adjourn for the year on December 19. Each district work period presents a renewed chance for your community to engage directly with congressional leaders and to advocate for continued federal attention to your specific needs.
By fostering ongoing dialogue with our Congressional Delegation, Centralina aims to ensure that federal decisions reflect the perspectives and priorities of our region. We remain committed to these conversations and look forward to future opportunities to advance the region’s goals. Thank you to Congressman Moore, Congressman Harrigan and all the community partners who participated in these conversations.
