Supporting Senior Nutrition Across Our Region

March 9, 2026 — Healthy food and good nutrition are essential for older adults to maintain health, independence and quality of life as they age. What we eat supports physical strength and brain health. Proper nutrition helps reduce the risk of chronic disease, supports immune function and maintains cognitive health.

Food nourishes more than the body—it also supports connection. Shared meals and nutrition programs bring people together, boosting mood and reducing isolation and loneliness.

It can be challenging for many older adults to get the healthy and nutritious foods needed to maintain physical and cognitive health. This can lead to poor health outcomes. Proper nutrition is critical to reduce chronic illness, improve immune system functioning and enhance cognition. Food also brings people together, boosting mood and decreasing feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Centralina Area Agency on Aging is also supporting nutrition access through its in‑house PEAS Program (Providing Elders Additional Sustenance). This initiative currently serves more than 300 people across the Centralina region, providing a monthly delivery of prepared meals, produce boxes or boxes of shelf‑stable food items.

The PEAS Program helps ensure older adults— especially those living with dementia, experiencing limited mobility, or needing help with basic daily tasks like bathing, dressing, or preparing meals—have dependable access to nutritious foods that support their health and well‑being.

If you need help arranging home‑delivered meals, finding a meal in the community or need nutrition advice or support, Centralina Area Agency on Aging can help. Learn more here

Federal funds are commonly passed through state agencies in North Carolina before being awarded to local governments, which can make the original funding source less obvious. Before proceeding with a procurement, local governments should verify whether an award originates from a federal source. This determination affects compliance obligations, including procurement standards, reporting, and audit requirements.

When a construction or repair contract over $300,000 involves a building, the procurement and contract are subject to additional requirements under N.C.G.S. 143-128. Therefore, this question must be answered to determine whether the additional statutory requirements apply to this procurement scenario.

The micro-purchase threshold is a federal procurement threshold under which competitive procurement is not required. The default micro-purchase threshold is $15,000, but local governments may increase the micro-purchase threshold up to $50,000. An explanation of increasing the micro-purchase threshold and a template for the required annual self-certification is available here.
