Supporting Safety and Independence: The Success of S.L.I.P. in Union Co.

On October 9, 2024, Centralina hosted a Fall Celebration and Awards Ceremony at Atrium Ballpark in Kannapolis, NC. This event highlighted the work of our organization and member communities, in addition to several people and programs that have made an exceptional impact in our community over the last fiscal year.

Recipients of the Region of Excellence award in the category of “Aging in Action” serve as a leader in impacting communities so adults can age with choice, dignity and independence. Awardees implement programs that demonstrates a commitment and contribution to older and disabled adults.

About S.L.I.P.

Every year, preventable falls and house fires claim the lives of countless older adults, a stark reality underscored by national statistics. Individuals aged 65 and older are twice as likely to die in a fire, with the risk growing significantly with age. Meanwhile, one in four older adults falls each year, often resulting in injury or death. In response, the Council on Aging in Union County launched the Seniors Living in Place (S.L.I.P.) program to proactively address these risks—and the results have been transformative.

Initially funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), S.L.I.P. has transitioned from an 18-month pilot to a permanent initiative focused on helping older adults live safely and independently in their homes. The program provides comprehensive safety assessments and services free of charge, including the installation of fire safety equipment, distribution of medical alert buttons, and home modifications such as grab bars, ramps and durable medical equipment.

Each S.L.I.P. home visit includes a thorough assessment across three key areas: fall risk, fire hazards, and medical needs. Personalized interventions are then developed to address each home’s unique risks. Over 460 medical alert buttons have already been distributed, directly contributing to faster emergency responses and saving at least ten lives.

Beyond safety modifications, the program fosters community involvement. Older adult volunteers play an active role by assisting with installations and deliveries, creating a network of peer support and promoting social engagement. The program also supports families through caregiver resources, education, and connections to additional services like in-home aides and adult day programs.

S.L.I.P.’s success is deeply rooted in collaboration. Partnerships with the American Red Cross, Union County Fire Departments, EMS, and 911 Dispatch have strengthened emergency preparedness and fire prevention efforts. With continued support from the community, the Council on Aging remains committed to ensuring that all older adults in Union County have the opportunity to age safely, with dignity and independence in their own homes.
