This year marks a monumental milestone in our nation’s commitment to older adults: the 60th anniversary of the Older Americans Act (OAA). Enacted in 1965 and created in response to growing concerns about the lack of community-based services for older adults, the OAA laid the foundation for critical services that promote the health, independence and dignity of aging Americans. Nationally, OAA-funded programs serve over 14 million older adults each year, which is about 1 in 6 Americans aged 60+, allowing older adults to age in place and avoiding costly institutional based care.
The OAA at Home
At Centralina Area Agency on Aging, we’re proud to carry out this legacy every day. Over the past six decades, the OAA has helped fund and provide services like:
- In-home and community-based supports
- Nutrition services and meal programs
- Transportation assistance
- Caregiver support and respite
- Health and wellness education, falls prevention and chronic disease self-management
- Long Term Care Ombudsman Program and elder rights advocacy
- Family Caregiver Support and Respite Care
These services aren’t just programs; they are lifelines to over 500,000 older adults aged 60 and older who live in Centralina’s nine county region. They reflect the values of a society that believes aging should be a chapter filled with empowerment, not isolation.
“The Older Americans Act has shaped the way we care for our aging population with compassion and purpose” said Aging Programs Director Linda Miller. “Sixty years later, its mission still guides us and helps us empower older adults to thrive, remain independent and feel seen. At Centralina, we’re proud to continue this work and meet the needs of today and tomorrow.”
As we honor the impact of the OAA, we realize that our work in the region is more important than ever as our older and disabled adult population grows and those over the age of 60 make up a greater majority.
