Davidson’s Co-Responder Re-Defines Emergency Response

On October 9, 2024, Centralina hosted a Fall Celebration and Awards Ceremony at Atrium Ballpark in Kannapolis, NC. This event highlighted the work of our organization and member communities, in addition to several people and programs that have made an exceptional impact in our community over the last fiscal year.

Improving Quality of Life is a Region of Excellence award category that celebrates the towns, cities and counties that demonstrate commitment to creating a great place for people to live, work and play. Communities across the region are dedicated to providing a quality of life that enables all people to have the amenities, services and opportunities they need to thrive.

Davidson’s Co-Responder

woman smilingIn May of 2023, the Town of Davidson Police Department announced the implementation of a new Co-Responder Program. The Co-Responder program is housed within the Davidson Police Department (DPD) and utilizes a unique relationship between law enforcement officers and a trained clinician.  The program is a hybrid model where the DPD and the designated clinician collaborate on responding to calls, evaluating the nature of incoming service calls and whether action by law enforcement is appropriate. If not, DPD dispatches Co-Responder Koa Goode (pictured). Goode’s job is to ensure a proper response and to provide targeted services, reducing the need for future calls to 911.

Through her role, Goode provides a mobile, community-based service focused on mental health, substance use and situational crisis intervention services.  During the past year, she has been able to address a common gap in law enforcement, offering alternatives to arrest and providing Davidson residents with an opportunity to explore options to resolve their circumstances that might not be apparent otherwise. This program encourages community members to have an active role in identifying solutions to their unique needs and circumstances.
