On October 9, 2024, Centralina Regional Council celebrated local leaders and community achievements during its Fall Celebration and Awards Ceremony at Atrium Ballpark in Kannapolis, NC. Among the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the prestigious James D. Prosser Excellence in Government Leadership Award to retired Albemarle City Manager Michael Ferris.
With nearly 30 years of service to the City of Albemarle, Michael Ferris has left an enduring mark on his community through visionary leadership, ethical standards and a deep commitment to public service. Beginning his career with Albemarle in 1997 as Assistant City Manager and serving as City Manager from 2014 until his retirement in February 2024, Mr. Ferris guided the city’s remarkable transformation from a former textile mill town to a thriving, modern community.
Under his leadership, Albemarle’s downtown was revitalized through projects like the comprehensive streetscape master plan and the creation of new public spaces, including a pedestrian plaza that has become a vibrant gathering spot. His work to bring a Pfeiffer University satellite campus downtown stimulated economic growth, attracting new businesses, restaurants and residents to the heart of the city.
Mr. Ferris also spearheaded the development of the Albemarle Business Center, a 282-acre industrial park designed to create high-quality job opportunities and support local economic growth. His introduction of a downtown catalyst grant program provided nearly $200,000 to help local businesses make critical improvements, demonstrating his commitment to fostering a strong business environment.
Beyond his transformative projects, Mr. Ferris instilled a culture of integrity, respect and teamwork throughout city government, establishing core values that guide employees to this day. His service extended beyond Albemarle, with active roles in regional and national organizations such as the International City/County Management Association and the North Carolina City & County Management Association. Locally, he supported initiatives to address homelessness, improve healthcare and strengthen community resources through his work with Homes of Hope, United Way and the Stanly County Hospital Foundation.
Respected for his open-mindedness, fairness and sense of humor, Mr. Ferris built strong relationships with both staff and elected officials, earning widespread trust and admiration. His forward-thinking leadership and dedication to ethical governance make him a deserving recipient of this year’s James D. Prosser Excellence in Government Leadership Award.
Michael Ferris’s career stands as an inspiring example of the positive and lasting impact that visionary, ethical leadership can have on a community.
